Ceph is the gold standard in software defined storage.

Ceph is the leading open source platform for software-defined storage (SDS), providing highly scalable object, block and file storage. Its accessibility, openness, unparalleled flexibility, rich features, an impressive and growing roster of enterprise ambassadors and an already deep and devoted user community ensures it continues to be known as ‘the Swiss Army Knife of SDS’.

As a distributed, scale-out storage framework, Ceph caters best to high bandwidth, medium latency types of applications, such as content delivery (think Netflix, Comcast, AT&T), archive storage (Dropbox-type applications), or block storage for virtualisation, but it can handle almost anything.

Its inherent scale-out support means you can gradually build large systems as cost and demand require, and it sports enterprise-grade features such as erasure coding, thin provisioning, cloning, load-balancing, automated tiering between flash and hard drives, and simplified maintenance and debugging.

And, unlike proprietary formats, you can integrate with a myriad of other storage software solutions which allows you to avoid the dreaded “vendor lock-in” arrangement more commonly found with our more traditional counterparts.

From its inception, SoftIron has believed in the undeniable future of Ceph as the premier platform for software-defined storage. We’ve engineered our hardware platform specifically for Ceph; this complete interoperability delivers performance gains and TCO optimisation impossible running generic hardware.

We’ve simplified Ceph

If your organization runs applications with different storage interface needs, Ceph is the ideal solution. Ceph’s foundation is the Reliable Autonomic Distributed Object Store (RADOS), which provides your applications with object, block, and file system storage in a single unified storage cluster—making Ceph flexible, highly reliable and easy for you to manage.

There’s no question Ceph is powerful, but it also has a history of complexity which has challenged organizations as they grow.

We set out to change this experience and we did it by designing our hardware from scratch, specifically for Ceph, from the very beginning. We took a media-first approach and crafted a purpose built Ceph appliance called HyperDrive. Because we don’t assemble from off-the-shelf, generic hardware, we’re not encumbered by traditional architecture and we’re not left with distracting, excessive hardware components. The box comes pre-configured so you can plug-in and go.

Plus, we offer roadside assist-style support when you need it most. And because we built the whole stack we can troubleshoot it end-to-end to get you back up and running in no time.

SoftIron is a founding member of The Ceph Foundation

The Ceph Foundation is a directed fund project of The Linux Foundation. Established in November 2018 under the leadership of Sage Weil, founder and chief architect of Ceph, the fund aims to raise, budget and spend funds in support of the Ceph open source project.

SoftIron is proud to be on the founding board of the foundation alongside industry heavyweights and we look forward to playing a pivotal role in the leadership and direction of the future development of Ceph.
