Facilitate file sharing within an enterprise environment, and across multiple organisations and geographies

Whether data residency legislation has you operating multiple, separate clusters across geographies or your operations rely on a hybrid cloud approach to storage and collaboration, you can enable sophisticated remote working practices and reduced management overhead by building your solution on SoftIron’s resilient data centre appliances.

SoftIron SIMBA implements SMB for Ceph

The SMB protocol is still incredibly popular when it comes to enterprise file sharing, enabling interoperability across environments, file locking, permission control and symbolic links.

SIMBA is SoftIron’s own implementation of SMB, which aims to cover the same resiliency and scalability features of the modern SMB 3.0 protocol, working smoothly with Ceph to capitalise on its innate strengths.

Manage “big data” with less of the “big cost”

Working with large datasets can result in soaring infrastructure costs, which historically has lead to the adoption of tape storage systems for storing cold data. But this solution creates another problem of its own – slow data retrieval. SoftIron’s platform is optimised for dense storage at greatly reduced power and cooling expenses – as low as 20% compared to generic hardware – reducing the time to value for data retrieval and analysis.

Create a unified storage solution across the hybrid cloud

Hybrid cloud storage is, for many enterprises, the best of both worlds, but without careful governance (and software rules in place to enforce them) it can devolve into data spread haphazardly across disparate locations, both on-premises and in the cloud, creating artificial silos and bottlenecks in collaboration efforts.

SoftIron appliances work seamlessly with software-based data management and protection platforms to create searchable unified storage geared towards collaboration – see our file collaboration resources to learn more.

Keep your files where you need them

Replicate data across geographies so that your collaborators have access to up-to-date data sets without extensive, repeated retrieval delays caused by slow external connections or unwieldy file sizes.

And you don’t need to rely solely on traditional data centre installations to make this work – SoftIron HyperDrive is engineered for power-efficient performance with up to an 80% reduction in cooling requirements compared to generic hardware running Ceph, all in a compact 1U form factor, ideal for edge computing installations.

Why SoftIron?

Task-specific engineering that delivers power efficient performance

HyperDrive has been designed from the ground up for full interoperability with Ceph. This, combined with a form factor designed to maximise cooling efficiency, means that single racks can be densely provisioned while remaining within power limits. Filling racks in this manner, and distributing data evenly with powerful replication methods, can offer dramatic cost savings compared to traditional enterprise solutions.

Fully auditable secure provenance

Where other manufacturers opt to cut costs by outsourcing manufacture to third parties (and therefore passing on the supply chain risks to their customers) SoftIron takes the opposite approach.

SoftIron has in-house, full control over the design and manufacture of our products. Because of this, we can readily enable appliance integrity audits and system verification at a granular level by third parties.

Simplify infrastructure management tasks at any scale

Skilled network and data engineers are difficult to find, and not all organisations can afford to hire one even when they’re available.

HyperDrive addresses critical skills shortages around data infrastructure management, by simplifying common data centre administration and maintenance tasks. By using SoftIron’s products, customers can conduct many previously complex data management tasks via the dashboard provided by the HyperDrive Storage Manager, and our patented “Ceph button”.
